Canadian Language Benchmark Guide (language conversion table)

Many of Canada’s immigration programs require applicants to demonstrate proficiency in English or French, the country’s two official languages. Proficiency in one of these languages can significantly enhance an immigrant’s ability to secure employment and integrate into Canadian society. To standardize the assessment of language skills, the Government of Canada uses the Canadian Language Benchmark Levels (CLB Levels). The CLB system translates scores from various language tests into comparable benchmarks, allowing for consistent evaluation across different tests.

Approved Language Tests for Canadian Immigration

Canada recognizes several language tests for immigration purposes. These tests assess the four language abilities: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Immigration applicants must submit results from these tests, valid for two years from the test date. If an applicant’s test results are older than two years at the time of application submission, they must retake the test.

  • Approved Language Tests

For English: CELPIP-General and IELTS General Training.
For French: TEF Canada and TCF Canada.
– Ensure your test results are valid (less than two years old) when you complete your Express Entry profile and apply for permanent residence.
