What is Express Entry?

Express Entry is an online system that manages applications for permanent residence from skilled workers. It covers three federal economic immigration programs:

Additionally, candidates in the Express Entry pool can be nominated by a province or territory through the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP).

Steps to Apply

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility There are two ways to find out if you’re eligible

  • Answer a few questions on the Government of Canada website to see if you meet the minimum requirements.
  • Review the detailed requirements for each program.

Step 2: Create an Express Entry Profile

If you’re eligible, create an Express Entry profile. You’ll need to provide information about your skills, work experience, language ability, education, and other personal details. You will be scored using the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) and placed in a pool of candidates.

Step 3: Gather Required Documents

Prepare your documents early, as some may take a while to obtain. Required documents typically include language test results, educational credential assessments, job offers, police certificates, medical exams, and proof of funds.

Step 4: Submit Your Profile

Once your profile is complete, submit it to enter the Express Entry pool. Keep your profile up to date, especially if your circumstances change.

Step 5: Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA)

Candidates with the highest scores in the pool are invited to apply for permanent residence. If you receive an ITA, you have 60 days to submit your application online. Most complete applications are processed within six months or less.

How Are Points Calculated?

Points are awarded based on several factors including age, education, work experience, language skills, job offers, and provincial nominations. The CRS assigns a score to each profile, and candidates with the highest scores are invited to apply for permanent residence.

Federal Economic Immigration Programs

1. Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

The FSWP is for skilled workers with foreign or Canadian work experience who meet specific criteria in education, work experience, and language proficiency. Applicants must have at least one year of continuous full-time or equivalent paid work experience in a skilled occupation. They must also meet a minimum score on the FSWP points grid, which assesses factors like age, education, work experience, and adaptability.

2. Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

The FSTP targets skilled workers qualified in a skilled trade. To be eligible, candidates must have at least two years of full-time work experience in a skilled trade within the five years before applying. Additionally, they must have a valid job offer for full-time employment for at least one year or a certificate of qualification in their skilled trade issued by a Canadian provincial, territorial, or federal authority.

3. Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

The CEC is for skilled workers who have gained work experience in Canada. Applicants must have at least one year of skilled, professional, or technical work experience in Canada within the three years before applying. This program is ideal for temporary foreign workers and international graduates who wish to become permanent residents.

Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)

Provinces and territories can nominate candidates from the Express Entry pool to meet their local labor market needs. A nomination from a province or territory gives you extra points and boosts your chances of receiving an ITA.

Benefits of Express Entry

  • Efficient Processing: Most applications are processed within six months.
  • Transparency: Candidates can see their scores and understand the selection process.
