Who Needs a Study Permit?

Most international students require a study permit to study in Canada. However, there are some exceptions:

  • Short-Term Studies: A study permit is not needed if the program or course is six months or less and can be completed within the authorized period of stay in Canada.
  • Minor Children: If the student is a minor child in Canada and one of their parents is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, or if they are in Canada with a parent who has a work or study permit, a study permit is not needed to attend pre-school, primary, or secondary school.
  • Family or Staff of Foreign Representatives: A study permit is not needed if the student is a family member or staff of a foreign representative to Canada who Global Affairs Canada accredits.
  • Foreign Armed Forces: A study permit is not needed if the student is a member of a foreign armed force under the Visiting Forces Act.

Key Requirements for a Study Permit

  1. Acceptance Letter: An acceptance letter from a DLI in Canada is required.
  2. Proof of Funds: Proof of sufficient funds to pay tuition fees, living expenses for the student and any family members accompanying them to Canada, and return transportation for the student and any family members is required.
  3. Supporting Documents: A police certificate may be required to prove that the student has no criminal record and poses no security risk to Canada. A medical examination may also be necessary to confirm good health.
  4. Intent to Leave: Convincing an immigration officer that the student will leave Canada when the study permit expires is necessary.

Conditions of the Study Permit

A study permit comes with specific conditions that must be adhered to during the stay in Canada:

  1. Enrollment: Enrollment at a DLI must be maintained, and reasonable and timely progress toward completing the program must be made.
  2. Work Authorization: If the study permit includes work authorization, working part-time (up to 20 hours per week) during regular academic sessions and full-time during scheduled breaks (e.g., winter and summer holidays) is permitted.
  3. Location: Staying in a specific province or territory may be required if the permit includes such a condition.
  4. Expiry Date: Studying must stop, and Canada must be left by the expiry date on the study permit unless an extension or change of status is applied for.

Applying for a Study Permit

  1. Prepare Documents: Gather all necessary documents, including the acceptance letter, proof of funds, and any other required documents.
  2. Submit Application: The application must be submitted online through the IRCC website. Applications on paper can also be submitted if certain conditions are met, such as having a disability that prevents online application.
  3. Provide Biometrics: Most applicants must provide their fingerprints and photo (biometrics) at a Visa Application Centre (VAC). Arrangements will be made to complete this step.
  4. Wait for Processing: The processing times on the IRCC website should be checked regularly, and the application will be processed accordingly. During this period, additional documents may be requested, or an interview may be required.
  5. Receive Permit: Upon approval of the application, a Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction will be issued. This letter and the passport and acceptance letter must be presented to the immigration officer upon arrival in Canada to receive the study permit.
